“Aussie Fucking Pride!”

Ever since a little event know as the Cronulla Riots, there seems to be a stench of racism accompanying any Patriotism. For anyone who is unaware, This was a day when a bunch of ignorant people acted on their racial prejudices by assaulting ethnic minorities in large groups. It was straight up embarrassing for a vast majority of the population. One of the iconic images form the event was a bunch of white guys with Southern Cross tattoos bashing a guy in the middle of the day because of his skin colour.

I love Australia as much as the next Aussie, but I thought the reason we loved it was because of our multiculturalism, our relaxed vibe, and our beautiful landscapes.

Anyway, whether it was because of the Cronulla Riots or because of the rash of “Aussie Pride” tattoos, it is commonly seen as at least a touch racist and a tattoo faux pas to sport a patriotic tattoo.

From Southern Crosses, to Ned Kellys, to ‘Australian Made’ Kangaroos, to Australian Flags, to the very simple “Aussie Pride” script. These tattoos often conjure up images of racism, violence and a lack of acceptance of others.

Just from the sheer size of this tattoo every part of me wanted to hate this dude.
I had already made my mind up about this guy without giving him a chance.

I asked him for a photo and he obliged, stoked that someone would pay him the attention and seemed pretty proud of his tattoo. His whole attitude was positive.

I walked away with a solid reality check and the realisation that I too, am guilty of stereotyping people and not accepting others based on their appearance.

At the end of the day, I don’t know this guy and I only talked to him for about 10 seconds. Good or bad, I really can’t judge this bloke.

But the point (for me anyway) is that maybe we should treat people on how they act and not what colour their skin is OR what they have tattooed on it!

BESIDES…. This is without question, a gnarly back piece!
